When the symptoms overlap,
the exam should look closer.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and Hypermobility Spectrum Disorders can involve more than joint flexibility. At Foundations, evaluation includes the symptoms affecting daily function.

What the evaluation includes

A detailed medical history and physical examination. Joint hypermobility is evaluated using the Beighton score as outlined in the 2017 diagnostic criteria, with consideration of other joints and symptoms that affect function.

When appropriate, evaluation may also include screening for and management of related comorbidities, such as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS).

How treatment may be approached

Treatment is individualized. Strategies may include:

  • Joint stabilization and rehabilitation recommendations, including physical and occupational therapy.
  • Activity pacing, symptom management, and joint protection strategies.
  • Management of musculoskeletal pain, headaches, and dizziness.
  • Sleep optimization and fatigue management.
  • Medication management when appropriate.
  • Procedures such as trigger point injections, joint injections, EMG/NCS, and OMT.
  • Collaboration with rehabilitation experts and trusted physician specialists.
Associated symptoms and conditions

Hypermobility may occur alongside chronic musculoskeletal pain, dysautonomia including POTS, headache disorders, gastrointestinal symptoms, MCAS, sleep disorders, small fiber neuropathy, and pelvic or bladder conditions.

Some individuals have joint symptoms alone. Others experience symptoms across multiple body systems.

“Because she is the only one with this niche specialty in hEDS support, availability can be tricky.”
